Onboarding and Orientation Policy Template
Set new staff up for compliance success from day one with a structured onboarding and orientation policy that meets ACQSC workforce governance expectations.
Overview
The first weeks in any aged care role are critical for both competency and culture. The Aged Care Quality Standards require providers to demonstrate that staff have the skills, knowledge, and values to deliver safe, person-centred care — and this begins at orientation. A Workforce Training and Competency Policy covers ongoing training, but a dedicated Onboarding and Orientation Policy governs the structured process of preparing new staff before they begin unsupervised care delivery. This template covers the full induction lifecycle.
What This Policy Covers
- Pre-start obligations (WWVP checks, vaccination, uniform, documentation)
- Day 1 orientation agenda and mandatory content
- Introduction to the Charter of Aged Care Rights and resident dignity
- Facility-specific systems, policies, and emergency procedures
- Buddy system and supervised practice period
- Role-specific competency assessment within first 30 days
- Probationary review process and documentation
- Cultural orientation for diverse workforces
- Mandatory training completion within orientation period
- Feedback from new staff on orientation quality
Compliance Alignment
- Aged Care Quality Standard 7 – Human Resources
- Aged Care Quality Standard 8 – Organisational Governance
- Aged Care Act 1997 – Approved Provider responsibilities
- Fair Work Act 2009 – Probationary period obligations
- Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (induction safety training)
Why This Policy Matters
ACQSC assessors regularly interview staff about their orientation experience as a proxy for overall workforce governance quality. Facilities that cannot demonstrate a structured, documented onboarding process — and where staff report receiving inadequate induction — receive negative findings under Standard 7. This policy also reduces early staff turnover by creating a supportive, structured entry experience.
