Person-Centred Care Training Module for Aged Care Staff

Free training resource aligned to Standard 1 of the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards

Person-centred care is the foundation of quality aged care. It means treating every resident as a whole person — with a unique history, identity, values, and preferences — not just a list of care needs. Under the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, providers must demonstrate that staff understand and consistently apply person-centred care principles across every interaction.

This free Person-Centred Care Training Module gives aged care staff a practical, accessible grounding in what person-centred care looks like in day-to-day practice, and how it aligns with the legal and regulatory expectations of the Aged Care Act 2024.

Why Person-Centred Care Is Central to the Strengthened Standards

Standard 1 — The Person sits at the heart of the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards. It recognises that older people receiving aged care are rights-holders, not passive recipients of services. Under Standard 1, providers must show that:

  • Residents are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion
  • Care reflects individual identity, culture, language, and preferences
  • Residents can exercise choice and control over their daily lives
  • Staff understand and actively uphold the Statement of Rights under the Aged Care Act 2024
  • Residents have access to advocacy and are supported to raise concerns without fear

Auditors from the ACQSC assess person-centred care not just through documentation but through direct observation and conversations with residents and their families. Training your staff in this area is critical.
